Sangamon County Board overwhelmingly approves measure to ban future alcohol sales at bars past 1 a.m.

Closing time, several bars across Sangamon County will have to close earlier.

The Sangamon County Board overwhelmingly approved a measure to ban alcohol sales after 1 a.m. for non-Springfield bars in the county.

Some bars were, as per their particular liquor license, never allowed to stay open until 3 a.m.

Despite concerns this could have on sales for local bars, a county board member said this move can help prevent violence.

Reports from Sangamon County said there were several cases of stabbings and hit-and-runs last year at bars open after 1 a.m.; the measure takes effect June 1.
