Tuesday’s heavy storm causes road closures, power outages across Springfield

As parts of Central Illinois get doused with an abundance of rain, those living in and commuting across Springfield will have to be wary of several unkind innovations.

City Water Light and Power announced in the early afternoon that crews were – at that time – already responding to power outages across different parts of the capitol city. This includes:

  • Over 600 customers in an area from E. Cook St. to E. Ash St. between Taylor Ave. and S. 12th St. approximately due to a tree falling on a power pole at Wheeler Avenue and Kansas Street.
  • Over 1,200 customers in an area serving an area along Greenbriar Dr. to areas along W. Iles Ave between Archer Elevator Rd. and W. White Oaks Drive.
  • Over 850 customers in an area from S. Grand Ave. to W. Ash St. between S. Douglas Ave. and S. College St. approximately, along with a section of S. Whittier Ave. and S. Lowell Ave. to the south to W. Lenox Ave.

Furthermore, those planning to travel north-bound on 9th street will have to come up with a different route, as an accident at 9th and Carpenter has blocked up traffic while also causing electrical and traffic issues across the general area. Motorists are encouraged to take alternative routes to avoid delays and should slow down and drive with caution around this work zone.

WMAY will have more updates on these and related circumstances as more information emerges.

And, for live updates, customers can view and track their electric service status from the outage map, available from the Outage Center link at CWLP.com at https://outagemap.cwlp.com/.  More information and updates on outage status will be posted as available on the CWLP Facebook and X (Twitter) pages, www.facebook.com/4CWLPwww.twitter.com/CWLP_.
