  All Day National Show Horse Registry   The 2013 National Show Horse Registry (NSHR) Finals return to Springfield Sept. 12 – 14 in the Coliseum at the Illinois State Fairgrounds. Horses from around the country are expected for the show, competing for National titles, prize money, and college scholarships. Admission to the event is free and open to the public. The National Show Horses are a cross between the Arabian and any other breed of horse. They compete in many different divisions, including pleasure, equitation, walk trot, driving, halter, 3- and 5-gaited competitions, a weanling jackpot class, and more. We offer classes for Arabians, National Show Horses, and Show Horse Alliance enrolled horses. Show Horse Alliance is a program where ALL saddle seat breeds compete against each other in many different divisions. You might see Saddlebreds, Friesians, Hackneys, Arabians and National Show Horses all competing in the same class for the big prize. New this year is the Arabian/National Show Horse Community Tournament Classes & Championships. The purpose of this division is to introduce potential new owners to the joys of showing and riding our horses by giving the beginning riders of any breed an opportunity to gain experience by offering beginner classes at our horse shows.   All Day Food For Fines   The Chatham Area Public Library is proud to announce the "Food For Fines" program, which will run Friday, Sept. 13 through Saturday, Sept. 21 (9/13-9/21). This program allows patrons to pay down their CAPLD Library fines by donating canned goods at the Library for the Ball-Chatham Food Pantry. For each item donated $1 will be waived from current overdue fines for library patrons and Chatham County Market will match the donated items up to $400. Call the library for more information at 483-2713 - and please take this opportunity to pay down your overdue fines while helping those in need - don't forget to bring your library card!
 
  9:00PM 10:00PM Friday Night Star Parties   The University of Illinois Springfield’s popular Friday Night Star Parties will resume the Friday after Labor Day and run through the end of October. Those dates include: Sept. 6, 13, 20, and 27 and Oct. 4, 18, and 25. Please note that there is not a Star Party on Oct. 11. Friday Night Star Parties are held from 8 to 10 p.m., weather permitting, at the UIS observatory on the roof of Brookens Library. Star Parties are hosted by Dr. John Martin, associate professor of Astronomy/Physics. The observatory’s telescopes will be used to view a number of celestial objects, including the moon, when visible; the Ring Nebula; globular star clusters M13 and M15; and other double stars and star clusters. A typical Star Party begins with a presentation as visitors ascend the stairs to the observatory, learning about galaxies, the sun and stars along the way. On the roof observation deck visitors are invited to view the skies through telescopes and ask questions. Participants are welcome to arrive and leave as they wish between 8 to 10 p.m. Friday Night Star Parties are free and open to the public. Reservations are not required and groups are encouraged to attend. The entrance to the campus observatory is located outside Brookens Library on the southeast corner of the building. Star Parties may be canceled for cloudy weather. Questions about whether the weather is suitable for viewing should be directed to 217/206-8342 at 7 p.m. on the evening of the Star Party.   7:30PM 10:00PM Rent by the Springfield Muni   Rent by the Springfield Muni Set in the East Village of New York City, RENT is about love, finding your voice and living for today. Winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, RENT has become a pop cultural phenomenon with songs that rock, and a story that resonates with audiences of all ages. Based loosely on Puccini's La Bohème, RENT follows a year in the life of a group of friends struggling to make it in the big city. AIDS and both its physical and emotional complications pervade the lives of Roger, Mimi, Tom, and Angel; Maureen deals with her chronic infidelity through performance art; her partner, Joanne, wonders if their relationship is worth the trouble; Benjamin has sold out his Bohemian ideals in exchange for a hefty income and is on the outs with his former friends; and Mark, an aspiring filmmaker, feels like an outsider to life in general, always behind the camera recording events but never playing a part.   7:30PM n/a Rent   The Springfield Municipal Opera (The Muni) and Springfield Clinic will present Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize–winning musical, Rent, for three consecutive weekends, Sept. 6-7, 12-14 and 19-21 (no Wednesday or Sunday Performances) at 7:30 p.m. at its outdoor amphitheater located at 815 East Lake Drive in Springfield. The 7:30 p.m. start time is an all-new time as well as September being a first time extension of its season for the Springfield Muni Opera and allows enjoying the beautiful fall weather and takes advantage of the earlier sunsets in September. Rent is the cutting-edge musical, based on Puccini’s opera La Boehme that electrified a whole generation of theatergoers. Rent tells the story of seven friends in the AIDS-ravaged New York City of the 1990s: Roger, Mimi, Tom, Angel, Maureen, Joanne and Mark share their struggle to support themselves and celebrate their lives in spite of the crises that confront them, from shifting romantic entanglements to preserving their artistic integrity to the life-and-death struggle with a disease that is threatening almost everyone they know. Through its powerful rock score, RENT explores the lives of a community of young artists who choose to celebrate life while coping with disease and poverty.
