  All Day COAT DRIVE   During the months of December and January, the Rochester Public Library will be holding their annual Coat Drive. Accepted articles for the collection will be new or gently used coats, both children and adults), hats, scarves, and gloves. Donations are being accepted at Rochester Public Library through the end of January at #1 Community Drive, in Rochester. For further information please contact Susan at (217) 498-8454.
 
  8:30AM 5:00PM Figurism: Narrative and Fantastic Figurative Art   Figurism: Narrative and Fantastic Figurative Art brings together historical and contemporary body-based art by over fifty artists from the Illinois State Museum collection. The exhibition emphasizes the power and the range of the narrative and expressive uses of the figure in Midwest art. The artworks were selected to create a better understanding and consideration of different representational styles and the ability of the figure to carry feeling, memory, and experience. They were also selected with an eye toward something fantastic—a heightened sense of the super-real or super-natural—whether through aggressive, expressive form, high-keyed color, inventive graphics, or ambiguous situations. The Museum is open from 8:30-5:00 Monday through Saturday and from 12:00-5:00 on Sunday. Admission is free. Parking is available nearby and the building is ADA accessible.   10:00AM 4:00PM Remembering Nelson Mandela's Life & Legacy   The Springfield and Central Illinois African American History Museum at 521 East Washington Street continues its exhibit "Remembering Nelson Mandela's Life and Legacy" through January 31st. On view are original documents from his election as President of South Africa in 1994, letters to his family while in prison, personal memorabilia of Springfield residents who have visited South Africa, pictures and original sculptures from Africa. The Museum is open Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10am to 4pm. Special appointments can be made by calling Barbara Dickerman at 217-789-8965
 
  9:00AM 5:00PM Lincoln: History to Hollywood   Key sets, costumes and props from the award-winning movie "Lincoln" are coming to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, where they will be on display for many years to come. Children can explore the exhibit free of charge when accompanied by an adult. The exhibit, "Lincoln: History to Hollywood," will present Lincoln's office, where much of the movie takes place as the president ponders how to pass a constitutional amendment abolishing slavery, and a vignette of Mary Lincoln's bedroom, the setting for emotional confrontations between husband and wife. It will be displayed at Union Station, just across the street from the presidential museum. The station will serve as an annex to the presidential museum, where visitors can tour the exhibit and see video presentations about the movie. PRICE: Children can explore the exhibit free of charge when accompanied by an adult. The cost for adults is just $5. Adults also have the option of buying the new “full experience” package allowing them to tour the entire presidential library and museum and the new movie exhibit for $15.

  5:00PM n/a DSI Dinner and Awards Ceremony   Downtown Springfield, Inc. will be rocking when it holds its Annual Dinner and Awards Ceremony this January. During their twenty one years, DSI, an Illinois Main Street organization, has represented the merchants, property owners, restaurants and businesses of downtown by engaging in economic development, sustainability, historic preservation and design projects that have a positive impact on the overall vitality of our central business district. Such projects are supported by revenue generated by large specialty festivals, events, promotions, and organization membership dues. DSI's Annual Awards Dinner will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2014 at the Hilton Springfield at 700 East Adams Street. The event begins at 5:00 pm with cocktails and silent auction extravaganza; the program begins at 6:30 pm. Don't miss this premiere event, honoring individuals, businesses, organizations and projects for their outstanding service, accomplishments, and commitment to making downtown the place to live, work, and play. An overview of DSI achievements and the Mayor's State of Downtown address will also be featured. Take advantage of early-bird discount reservations through Dec. 31.
