  All Day Midwest Tribute to the King Competition   The Midwest Tribute to the King Competition takes place for its 18th year on Feb. 7, 8 and 9, 2014. This Springfield icon will be held at the Hilton Springfield in downtown Springfield, Illinois. Elvis tribute artists from around the country will entertain and compete for $15,000 in cash and prizes. The contest attracts 1,500 spectators from all over the Midwest to attend this three day fun fest. 2013 showcased the contestants performing with a live band, EAS Showband, the official band of Elvis Presley Enterprises/Graceland. "We are pleased, EAS will be back in 2014", said Potter. Along with the competition, a half dozen exhibitors offer their goods and services ranging from wardrobe to Presley memorabilia, records to flowers. Once the performances are over, there is Elvis karaoke and lots of meet and greet. NEW for 2014: Sunday Feb 9, ETA GaryElvis Britt will showcase his GaryElvis Gospel Show starring the Midwest Tribute to the King Elvis Choir featuring many of your favorite ETA's. Now in its eighteenth year, the event has enjoyed media coverage in Australia, Hong Kong and throughout the United States and Canada. Slated as master of ceremonies for the event is Ronnie Craig.   8:30AM 5:00PM Figurism: Narrative and Fantastic Figurative Art   Figurism: Narrative and Fantastic Figurative Art brings together historical and contemporary body-based art by over fifty artists from the Illinois State Museum collection. The exhibition emphasizes the power and the range of the narrative and expressive uses of the figure in Midwest art. The artworks were selected to create a better understanding and consideration of different representational styles and the ability of the figure to carry feeling, memory, and experience. They were also selected with an eye toward something fantastic—a heightened sense of the super-real or super-natural—whether through aggressive, expressive form, high-keyed color, inventive graphics, or ambiguous situations. The Museum is open from 8:30-5:00 Monday through Saturday and from 12:00-5:00 on Sunday. Admission is free. Parking is available nearby and the building is ADA accessible. But all is not as it seems. Behind the scenes, there's plenty of jealousy, greed, and good old fashioned backstabbing going on. Will Lorna finally get an award? Will Celia find her next big star?   9:30AM 3:30PM Lincoln Birthday Celebration   Abraham Lincoln's Birthday Celebration is Feb. 8 at the Mt. Pulaski Courthouse (9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.) - Refreshments, children's crafts (Abe Lincoln cards and valentines), games - servings of Mary Todd Lincoln's cake! Guest speaker: President Lincoln's response to the Dakota Conflict was an unpopular one, but it saved 265 Dakota and mixed-bloods from the fate met by the less fortunate 38. Tours available.
  7:30PM n/a Dual Piano   The Springfield High School vocal program will be hosting its 2nd Annual Dual Piano featuring the very talented Mark Gifford and Damien Kaplan in the Springfield High School Auditorium. In addition to performing at SHS, Mark and Damien have previously performed in events such as First Night in Springfield, The Illinois Bankers Association, twice at the Hoogland Center for the Arts for a fundraiser and for public enjoyment, and many other great performances around Illinois. Warning: Fun and hilarity will run amuck throughout the performance. Please come support the Springfield High School vocal program on Feb. 8, and enjoy a fun filled evening of entertainment and music. Show time is at 7:30 p.m., and doors open at 7:10 p.m. Tickets for the show are $15 for adults, $10 for high school/college students with school IDs, and $5 for kids ages 10 and under and can be purchased at the door starting at 6:30 p.m. All proceeds from the event will support the SHS vocal program's efforts to raise money to put a brand new Steinway Piano on the SHS auditorium stage.
