All Day Annie Leibovitz: Pilgrimage   Annie Leibovitz achieved her status as one of America's great photographers with unforgettable images of celebrities from John Lennon to Johnny Depp. But more recently, Leibovitz has trained her camera on famous places and objects, revealing more of herself in the process. "Pilgrimage," an exhibition of more than 70 of these stunning photographs from the Smithsonian American Art Museum's collection, opens at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum on Feb. 8, 2014, and runs through Aug. 31. Visitors will see the landscapes that captured Leibovitz's imagination: Niagara Falls, Yellowstone National Park, a New Mexico mesa. They can scrutinize her close-ups of objects like Emily Dickinson's only surviving dress, Elvis Presley's motorcycle and a bullet hole put in a target by Annie Oakley. Abraham Lincoln plays a major role in "Pilgrimage." Leibovitz photographed the stovepipe hat and the gloves Lincoln had with him on the night of his assassination, as well as a handwritten copy of the Gettysburg Address, photographic negatives of Lincoln and the Lincoln Memorial. Her photos of the bloodstained gloves were taken at the Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. Access to the exhibition will be free with paid admission to the presidential museum. The Leibovitz photographs will be complemented by elements from the Lincoln Presidential Library's own collections, selected by Mary Michals. The museum will also present a reading of Virginia Woolf's essay "A Room of One's Own" and selections from the play "The Belle of Amherst," both directed by Phil Funkenbusch. Also on the schedule: a screening of the Marilyn Monroe thriller "Niagara."

10:30AM 5:00PM Kids' Tennis Play Days at the State Fair   The local Springfield Tennis Association and Midwest Section of the USTA will host Kids Tennis Play Days during the Illinois State Fair. This is a joint effort to get area kids active and excited about the sport of tennis. The State Fair Tennis Play Days will be held Monday, Aug. 11 through to Friday, Aug. 15. Local USTA Officials will be available from 10:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. each day at the 36' court located in the old Happy Hallow area inside the main gate. Tennis Play Days are designed to get more kids playing tennis with local peers in a fun, non-threatening, competitive environment. Whether a child is just learning to compete in sports or is already competing in tennis, a Tennis Play Day gives kids additional opportunities to experience the thrill of competition without the threat of elimination with the emphasize on having fun. Tennis Play Days will also feature 10 and Under Tennis, the innovative USTA initiative designed to help introduce more kids to the sport. Similar to other youth sports like soccer and baseball, 10 and Under Tennis features equipment and courts scaled to kids' size. Racquets are shorter and lighter, and courts are smaller. Balls bounce lower and move slower, thereby making them easier to hit and keep in play. Kids have fun learning the game and build confidence at the same time. Kids, teens and even adults are welcome to participate by just showing up or making advance appointments by contacting Tom Kelly, President of the Springfield Tennis Association. If a parent is interesting in volunteering for a few hours a day to help man the booth in exchange for a free parking pass, please contact Mr. Kelly as well.
