| The suspect, James Holmes |
A 24-year-old, 6 foot man, James Holmes was taken into custody. Police found him behind the theater just after the shooting.
We're finding more out about the suspect. The Associated Press has details about Holmes recently dropping out of medical school. ABC News also has similar information about the suspect.
On a bit of a different note as people clamor to find a picture of the suspect ... interestingly, there are several people named James Holmes in the Aurora area. One James Holmes in that area is telling people he is not the shooter. Read his post here.
Police also indicate that a bomb was found inside the theater.
Springfield Police plan to have an increased presence in theaters. Read that story here.
As I've been saying on the air, we really should keep our emotions in check and not to jump to "policy" changes because of this "Lone Wolf".
With that, keep in mind that this incident will be used to push for gun control. As my radio program Saturday Session has been discussing for the past couple of weeks (hear those segments with the Saturday Session podcast page), the Arms Trade Treaty is weeks away from being signed by President Obama. Will this tragedy be used to secure support for the treaty? Most definitely! And, again, we should work to not overreact to this incident with a suppression of our Second Amendment.
Also, more than the associations of the suspect or his philosophies, we should consider whether or not the suspect was on medication. Read more about how certain prescription drugs can cause violent behavior here. The issue of these types of pharmaceutical drugs being used by mass shooters too often gets overshadowed by the media. We must work to understand this issue more.
In a bizarre type of foreshadowing, a 1985 Batman comic book shows an eerie scene of a man killing people inside a theater. See that comic strip below.
