Continuing the challenge of trying to stay on subject while an inordinate amount of people walk by, Greg Bishop will broadcast from the Illinois State Fair! Coming up we'll talk about what makes a journalist, the failed war on drugs and what kind of disasters happened to you on vacation. That's ahead when Bishop takes over the airwaves from the Illinois State Fair on 970 WMAY, The News and Talk of Springfield.
The Class War [on drugs]
Attorney General Eric Holder is set to announce some potential changes to how the Federal Government treats drug offenses. Some of the changes could be to reevaluate the mandatory minimum sentences and also to possibly release some older, non-violent offenders. But, we'll go further to evaluate the War on Drugs. We'll talk about the marginalization of drug users, the monetization of the war on drugs, issues with policing, the unfortunate class war and how the War on Drugs ultimately leads to the infringement of rights. There's a great documentary that recently came out about the War on Drugs. If you get a moment, you should watch The House I Live In. Watch the trailer at this link or below:
The right of the free press
What makes a journalist? Is it being a salaried worked at a mainstream media outlet? Or can someone do just as good of journalism completely independently using a weblog to update subscribers? These are some extremely important issues that now face the media world with some movements to have the law define what a journalist is. We'll breakdown some of the proposals and also what kinds of problems compartmentalizing "journalists" can pose.
A story out of Florida today gives us a chance to talk about some horrible, and uncontrollable things that may have happened to us while on vacation. Maybe it was something that happened while on a cruise, or visiting another country. Or maybe it was something like going camping and getting a horrible case of poison ivy. Either way, let's take a moment to share some of the horrible things that made some of our vacations a nightmare.
