The Springfield Park Board could soon be actively discouraging, but not prohibiting, smoking near children’s playgrounds in the city’s parks.
The board will vote this month on a proposal to post signs designating the playgrounds as “smoke-free zones.”
But there is no penalty attached for failing to follow the recommendation.
The State Journal-Register reports the idea originated from a Sangamon County Board member, Jen Dillman, who brought the suggestion to the board on her own, not in an official capacity.
Supporters say it will make the park environment cleaner and safer for kids.
