Illinois State Police insist public safety will not be compromised by Governor Pat Quinn’s plan to consolidate 20 communications centers down to just four.
In fact, the agency says one part of the plan – a greater reliance on GPS technology – will actually improve response times by allowing dispatchers to pinpoint the nearest officer to an emergency.
Quinn proposed slashing the number of communications centers in a cost-cutting move. A Springfield center would remain open, but would be responsible for a much larger geographic area.
