More than 1,000 Boy Scouts have retraced the steps a young Abraham Lincoln took when he walked from New Salem to Springfield to practice law.
Scouts collected trash along the way Saturday, as they trekked the 20-mile scenic route from New Salem State Park to Stuart Park in the state capital.
The pilgrimage wrapped up Sunday with a rainy walk from Lincoln’s Tomb to the Old State Capitol. The annual event was held in conjunction with with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency.
The state agency’s interim director, John Kim, says the scouts honored Lincoln by helping clean up the historic trail.
