Bill That Could End Free Retiree Health Care Clears Illinois House Committee

A bill that could effectively end the free health care that many state government retirees receive has cleared an Illinois House committee and is on its way to the full House. 

 

The bill, which is sponsored by House Speaker Mike Madigan, passed the House Executive Committee without a single “no” vote, despite opposition from the largest state employees’ union, AFSCME. 

 

The bill was amended to also end health insurance subsidies for retired lawmakers and judges.
