One of the biggest perks for state legislators is a step closer to ending.
A state Senate subcommittee has approved a bill to eliminate the tuition waivers that lawmakers can hand out to constituents.
The program has been under fire in recent years over allegations that some lawmakers use the lucrative program to benefit political supporters or to assist students outside their district.
Senate President John Cullerton has long supported the tuition waivers, but has apparently changed his mind, allowing the bill to advance.
