Few details have emerged so far about the death of a Nebraska man who was killed in an apparent shootout with Springfield police at a west-side hotel Friday.
Twenty-five-year-old Douglas Smith, described as a transient whose last known address was Bellevue, Nebraska, was pronounced dead shortly after that incident.
Police had gone to the Comfort Inn after receiving a report of a possibly suicidal man.
State police say they still don’t know how many shots were fired… or whether Smith died from a self-inflicted wound or was shot by police.
An autopsy today could shed more light on the incident.
