Springfield aldermen have given preliminary approval to the use of tax increment financing money to will help convert a longtime eyesore into a new supermarket along MacArthur Boulevard.
The city council committee of the whole approved using $3.5 million from the MacArthur TIF district, and placed the proposal on the consent agenda for final approval next week.
The funds will help Hy-Vee develop a full-size supermarket in the old K-Mart building on MacArthur, as well as an adjacent gas station and convenience store.
