Sangamon County is not alone in its search for a forensic pathologist.
The shortage in the field is a growing concern for coroners across Illinois, according to a weekend report in the Bloomington Pantagraph newspaper.
The McLean County morgue is now open seven days a week to accommodate the autopsies being performed by Bloomington pathologist Scott Denton.
Denton performs autopsies for Sangamon, Peoria, Champaign and McLean counties.
He says one of the big challenges is that med students won’t pursue pathology as a career option, because they can make much more money in other fields.
