An area lawmaker is calling for an amendment to the Illinois Constitution to protect gun rights… but cannot say yet exactly what changes he wants to make.
Republican State Senator Sam McCann says he wants to ensure that the gun rights spelled out in the U.S. Constitution cannot be diminished under Illinois law.
The state constitution already says the right to keep and bear arms will not be infringed, “subject to the police powers.”
McCann says the exact language of the amendment is still being worked out and won’t say if the reference to “police powers” would be removed.
