Police Seek Money for Technology Upgrades

Springfield police are seeking hundreds of thousands of dollars in next year’s budget to finally move officers away from handwriting reports and going to a paperless, computerized system.

Police Chief Robert Williams says it’s been a challenge finding the right technology that can transmit the information securely from squad cars to police headquarters and to other agencies.

But Alderman Frank Edwards was critical of the lengthy process, calling it ridiculous that officers are still writing out reports by hand in this day and age.

The city council is expected to vote on budgets for the police department and other agencies by mid-February.
